U.S. Highway 287 passes through the community, leading northwest 14 miles (23 km) to Clarendon, the county seat, and southeast 43 miles (69 km) to Childress. Texas State Highway 203 leads east from Hedley 30 miles (48 km) to Wellington.
Kirkland is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 287 and Farm to Market Road 1033, 8 mi (13 km) southeast of Childress and 20 mi (32 km) northwest of Quanah in southwestern Childress County. [2] The community used to be on Texas State Highway 5 in February 1930. [ 3 ]
Four churches and numerous other businesses had been founded by 1916. The Tell State Bank was in operation from 1916 to 1934, when it amalgamated with the Childress State Bank. Tell gradually lost most of its enterprises to other factors and improved transportation facilities. Tell operated two churches, a store, and a cotton gin by 1984.
