The Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT) was a test designed to measure the muscular strength, endurance, and cardiovascular respiratory fitness of soldiers in the United States Army. The test contained three events: push-ups, sit-ups, and a two-mile run with a soldier scoring from 0 to 100 points in each event based on performance.
Sit-up. The sit-up is an abdominal endurance training exercise to strengthen, tighten and tone the abdominal muscles. It is similar to a curl-up (that target the rectus abdominis and also work the external and internal obliques), but sit-ups have a fuller range of motion and condition additional muscles.
The test items are: Sit-ups: Maximum in one minute; Pull-ups (secondary schools)/Push-ups (ITE/Poly/JC/MI) (for males 15 years old and above) or Inclined Pull-ups (for females and males below 15 years old): Maximum in half-a-minute; Sit-and-Reach: Maximum distance; Shuttle Run: Minimum time for two laps of fixed distance
