Chains to grip are provided for portions of the last half-mile to the top at 5,790 feet (1,760 m). Starting in about 1848 the South Alternate of Oregon Trail (also called the Snake River Cutoff) was developed as a spur off the main trail. It bypassed the Three Island Crossing and continued traveling down the south side of the Snake River. It rejoined the trail near present-day Ontario, Oregon.
Access to White Rock from the town of Los Alamos and other cities and towns in New Mexico is via New Mexico State Road 4, which forms the northwestern boundary of the community. Administratively, White Rock is a neighborhood of Los Alamos; [citation needed] locals refer to Los Alamos (meaning not White Rock) as "the Townsite," or "the Hill".
