The series focuses on the adventures of a younger version of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends, including Percy, Nia, Kana, and Diesel. Throughout the episodes, they learn many life lessons and solve problems, while going around on their daily lives doing jobs, with help from each other and the other residents and visitors of the Island of Sodor.
A storm has swept Sodor, and the engines are all given different jobs to help clean up the mess. Thomas is upset about having to go slowly with a load of Farmer McColl's eggs, as the other engines are making more journeys than him. Eventually, Thomas decides to go fast after all, but this leads to some eggs getting broken.
Meanwhile, the Go-ongers are out on a camping trip, stopping at a Shinto shrine by a 1,000-year-old cedar tree to wish for good luck. However, the Ginjiro-go's engine breaks down, stranding the Go-ongers in the middle of the forest, where a spirit is believed to dwell.
Twenty episodes aired in the original broadcast, while six were first released direct to DVD as Engines and Escapades and later aired on TV. Jocelyn Stevenson stepped down as executive producer after Series 10, with Christopher Skala taking her place as executive producer for Series 11.
The series consists of 20 regular episodes as well as three half-hour specials: "A New Arrival", "World of Tomorrow", and "Thomas and the Royal Engine". The first two form a movie entitled "Marvelous Machinery”, while the latter is a celebratory episode commemorating the 75th anniversary of the original books. As the "Big World! Big Adventures!"
