If you splurge and by the strings in bulk, you can get a dozen sets of standard .014-.036 C6 gauges for about $3.05 a set, shipped straight to your mailbox within a couple days of ordering. Unless you live within walking distance of a good music store, you'll likely spend more for gas than what they charge for delivery.
In this period, Curly was based in Las Vegas when not touring, and had a steady gig there playing steel guitar and trumpet. Around this time Curly got a Fender 2000, which was Fenders new double 10 string (skinny, Jaguar style pickups). He was one of the last real pros to move up to 10 strings. Maybe every 6 months avg per instrument? I love the sound of fresh strings but I can live with the old ones, especially considering the cost of changing 88 strings over 6 steel guitars.
Those Scotty's strings look pretty good and the price is normal. The size I needed instead of the 7 string is the GHS Custom C6th- 6 Lap Steel Guitar Strings Gauges 15-36W - 2 Pack. Those seem a bit heavy for that lap steel. Try a set of regular gauge electric guitar strings (.013 to .056) and see if those work well for you. _____ Brad’s Page of Steel A web site devoted to acoustic & electric lap steel guitars
Your fingerpicks are the point of contact with your steel guitar strings, so they are very important to your tone. - I have known good fiddlers who play an old fiddle they paid only a couple of hundred bucks for, but they then spent over $1,000 for their fiddle bow, because the bow is the point of contact with the fiddle strings! - Dave
I'm retired now and strings would be an expensive item on a regular basis. I admit to buying some especially for my Super 400 - my electric strings (10 to 46) wouldn't do the job on that guitar. _____ Roger Rettig: Emmons D10, B-bender Teles and Martins - and, at last, a Gibson Super 400! -----
