Different species and subspecies of box turtle live across North America and parts of Central America. Their range extends as far north as Maine, and as far south as Florida in the United States. From the east coast, various species range all the way to Arizona, Colorado, and Wyoming.
The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is a subspecies of the Common box turtle. It is native to the eastern part of the United States and is largely terrestrial. Box turtles are slow crawlers, extremely long-lived, slow to mature, and have relatively few offspring per year.
Most are found in relatively warm environments (e.g. Vietnam, Laos, and China). They like forested areas with lots of shade and some patches of light. In forests they are commonly found amongst wet leaves, logs and stumps around the edge of ponds.
Terrapene is largely found in cool to warm temperate regions east of the Rocky Mountains from southernmost Canada to the Gulf Coast of the United States and into Mexico. It is strongly terrestrial, although the Coahuilan box turtle (T. coahuila) is semiaquatic.
Eastern box turtles are usually found near ponds, fields, meadows, and woodlands throughout the eastern half of the United States. Although eastern box turtles are native to the eastern United States, they can sometimes be seen in other states.
Asian box turtles are in serious danger of extinction in their habitat because they are part of the food base of many Asian countries such as China, where they are captured for local food markets despite captive breeding farms. North American box turtles, on the other hand, are endangered by habitat destruction.
Eastern box turtles are predominantly terrestrial and live in a variety of vegetative areas, including shrubby grasslands, marshy meadows, open woodlands and field forest edges. They are often found near streams or ponds, or areas that have experienced heavy rainfall.
Eastern box turtles prefer an enriched habitat over a barren one. [9] They prefer deciduous or mixed forested regions, with a moderately moist forest floor that has good drainage. Bottomland forest is preferred over hillsides and ridges.
Eastern box turtles are found across the eastern and midwestern parts of the United States. Along the East Coast, they range from southern Maine to northern Florida. Their western boundaries range from Ala-bama northward into Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
Box turtles are native to North America. The widest distributed species is the common box turtle which is found in the United States (subspecies carolina, major, bauri, triunguis; south-central, eastern, and southeastern parts) and Mexico (subspecies yukatana and mexicana; Yucatán peninsula and northeastern parts).
