The Fifth Congress established the new county on December 17, 1840, and named it after Mirabeau B. Lamar, [5] who was the first vice president and the second president of the Republic of Texas. It is a UIL region 4A district, and is the largest in Lamar County, with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students.
