The Stony Hill School is a one-room school where on June 14, 1885, the teacher and his students held the first observance of "Flag Birth Day." [ 2 ] For this, the site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976.

When the school began it had just two teachers and fewer than 80 students. By 1912, attendance had grown to over 215 students. The school was demolished to accommodate increased enrollment. The new high school, known as Rhinelander High School today, had its first graduation on June 4, 1959, with a class of over 200 seniors. [3]

The first public school in Two Rivers was built in 1866 for $5,000 at the site of the current city hall and named the H.P. Hamilton School. In 1905, it was moved to the back of the lot and a new, red brick high school was built for $80,000. It was also named the H.P. Hamilton School and would eventually become City Hall.
Madison Central High School was Dane County's oldest school, having begun in 1853 in the basement of a Methodist church with one teacher and 90 students.
