The Realm Online, originally known as The Realm, is a long-running massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) initially launched by Sierra On-Line in December 1996 for Windows PC. In December 1996, Sierra released The Realm Online, an online fantasy role-playing game. After the sale, Ken Williams remained within the software division so that he could provide strategic guidance to Sierra, although he began to grow disillusioned as he soon found that his new titles at CUC meant very little and the software board met only once.
The Realm, as it was originally called, was a project of Sierra On-Line. Development on the title began in late 1995, with a 1996 beta and launch following soon after.
In February 2020, the "Deviled Eggs" (also known as "OB23") update was released, after which no update was released for the next 2 years. Throughout 2022, some teasers were released indicating an upcoming update to Realm Royale. In July 2022, Realm Royale Reforged was released on test servers, with the full version releasing a month later.

The Realm Online had fully animated 2D graphics, both in and out of combat situations, which made it accessible to a wider audience compared to more text-based games or the graphical MUDs on which it was based. Also, its gameplay and interface were already familiar to those accustomed to the graphical adventure games earlier popularised by Sierra.
