The original Metro station was closed on 8 July 2019 and was resited around 100 m (330 ft) to the south-east. On 4 August 2019, the station reopened as part of the new South Shields Interchange. The 60 stations on the Tyne and Wear Metro network vary widely in character. Some are former British Rail stations, whilst others were purpose-built for the Metro. Most of the stations are above ground, but several in central Newcastle and Gateshead are underground, namely Central, Jesmond, Haymarket, Monument, Manors, St. James and Gateshead.
It was eventually closed on 1 June 1981, when the line was temporarily shut down for conversion to Metro operation. It was replaced by a new South Shields Metro station a short distance to the south, when the line reopened in 1984. [3] The station building survived as an entrance to the Metro system until the 1990s, when it was demolished.
