According to Catskill forest historian Michael Kudish, the Slide wilderness contains the most extensive tract of first-growth forest in the Catskills. Much of the area remained out of reach during the peak years of logging and barkpeeling from eastern hemlock trees, to make tannin for leather production in the mid-19th century, and thus remained largely untouched.
Within the former are the three southernmost Catskill High Peaks: Peekamoose, Table and Lone mountains. At 3,847 feet (1,173 m), Table's summit is the highest point in the town. Slide Mountain, the highest peak in the Catskills, is north of Denning. A lower mountain, 2,990-foot (910 m) Red Hill, has a fire tower on its summit popular with hikers.
