ANSI/UL 263 – the default Standard for North America. For North American building codes, American National Standards Institute (ANSI)/UL 263 is the default Standard for evaluating fire protection of structural steelwork.
UL 263 is a standard for fire safety when working with building construction materials. It is a requirement for North American building codes, specifically the American National Standards Institute. Similar to the ASTM E-119 , UL 263 is a time-based fire test.
A list of fire protection for structural steelwork product categories evaluated by UL, along with the applicable standard(s), can be found in Appendix A. Each UL CCN provides a direct link to the Guide Information for the product category.
Fire resistance assemblies and products are developed by the design submitter and have been investigated by UL for compliance with applicable requirements. The published information cannot always address every construction nuance encountered in the field.

Two codes reign predominant when it comes to fire ratings: UL 263 to NFPA 285. Although similar, there are several differences in requirements. In this blog, we dive into the differences you should be aware of.
These requirements prescribe a standard fire exposure for comparing the performance of building construction assemblies. Application of these test results to predict the performance of actual building construction requires careful evaluation of test conditions.
