They were descendants of Vikings from Denmark who established themselves in Normandy, France, so the invading Normans would have been largely of Danish paternal ancestry and French maternal ancestry. Parts of southern Italy have an appearance I like to call Ottoman. That's from the influence of the Turks and regions that were once part of the Ottoman Empire. The men from these regions have the stereotypical greasy Italian mobster look. Go south to the island nation of Malta and the Ottoman and Italian blend gets much better. Lovely island.
