They sent me two new ones, no charge except a shipping/packaging/handling fee of $5. And yeah, Leupold calls them turret caps. They are model specific to a certain extent, so know what you have before you order anything. Go to the website of the brand scope you have and see what you can find. Teach.
Leupolds suggestion was to take it out shooting. Shoot once in the bottom left hand corner of a target. Click 16 clicks (4 inches) up and shoot again. Another 16 to the right, then 16 down, then 16 left. And theoretically my shots should make a 4 inch box with 2 shots in the original position. Took the scope out.

1. At 100 yards our scope can adjust 104.7" on the target, or 104.7" @ 300 feet. 2. Now if we divide 104.7 inches by 300 feet we get 0.349 inches per foot of stop to stop adjustment on our scope. 3. This means approx. .7" stop to stop at 24" for 100 MOA adjustment range scope.
Regarding your original question. I have both the VX/r in 2-7x33, 3-9x40 and a VX3 in 3.5-10x40. The VX/r has obviously has the red illuminated dot in the center, it makes target acquisition very quick without overwhelming the sight picture. They have a 30mm tube, so about 2 moa more elevation than the VX3.
I gathered up rings and what ever needed to mount a scope. In the middle of all this I got curious about how old that scope was. On the Leupold website under FAQ is a way to date these scopes. My 8x is in regular use. That scope was made in 1976. Wonder who has the oldest Leupold in regular use.
for 299.95 you can purchase a Super Sniper Series 10x42 ,16x42, or 20x42 rear focus parallax adjustment, 30mm tube, Black matte finish with the Mil-Dot reticle, 50cal. OK Scope from SWFA (www.RifleScopes.com and I recommend the 10x 42 hands down. I have it mounted on my .50BMG Armalite and I love it!
General Rifle Discussion ... Scope for a 2 guns
I mounted a Leupold VariX-III that is 3-9x32. I used Leupold QR Mount for the Marlin 1895, and the QR Rings. I got the idea from the Marlin Owners Forum. The whole setup is slick, and VERY functional. You can use the scope, or take it off to use the open sights. Returning the scope to the mount goes right back to ZERO.
My 10/22 has a 4x30 scope on some easily removable scope rings so that I can also use irons if needed. The 4x30 is perfect for the .22 if you ask me. It won't get you pinpoint accuracy but its good enough to be useful and quick. You also keep a good field of view and the 4x mag gives you good visibility. It's also more compact than say a 3-9 scope.
