The following is a list of freeways in Ontario as defined by the Official Road Map of Ontario published by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO). [1] [2] [3] The MTO defines a freeway as a divided highway with at least two lanes in each direction. [4]

Highway 58A was established during the 1970s following completion of the Welland By-Pass project of the Welland Canal and Highway 140. Initially envisioned as the southern terminus for Highway 406, the planned route first appeared on the Official Ontario Road Map in 1971, though it had been proposed since the release of Niagara Peninsula Planning Study in 1964.

The 1926 Official Road Map of Ontario boasted the "Highway from Windsor to the Quebec border, via London will all be paved at the end of the present year" and "a person will then be able to travel over 700 miles of pavement without a detour". [42]

Initially, the route was constructed as a two-lane connection from Highway 35 near Pontypool to Highway 28 on the outskirts of Peterborough.
