Following is a list of dams and reservoirs in Texas.. All major dams are linked below. The National Inventory of Dams defines any "major dam" as being 50 feet (15 m) tall with a storage capacity of at least 5,000 acre-feet (6,200,000 m 3), or of any height with a storage capacity of 25,000 acre-feet (31,000,000 m 3).
The lake was created as part of a project that focused on creating lakes for recreation, power generation, and water conservation on the Neches River and the Angelina River. For many years, locals have referred to both the lake and dam as "Dam B". The lake is bisected by U.S. Highway 190 very near its center-most point.
Completed in 1943 primarily as a flood control project, it was at the time the "largest rolled-earth fill dam in the world". [5] Only five times has the lake reached the dam's spillway at a height of 640 feet (200 m) above sea level: 1957, 1990, 2007, and twice in 2015. It takes its name from Denison, Texas, just downriver from the dam face.

The reservoir is fed by the Angelina River, the major tributary of the Neches River. The Reservoir is upstream of the Big Thicket National Preserve. The reservoir's capacity is 3,997,600 acre-feet (4.9310 × 10 9 m 3), and is the largest lake wholly within the state of Texas. It is the ninth largest reservoir in the United States.
It is one of the largest lakes in the Rio Grande system by both surface area and volume. Of the reservoir's 5,535,000-acre-foot (6.827 km 3 ) capacity, 61% is dedicated to water conservation and sediment control, 32% to flood control, and 7% to surcharge (flood storage above the top of the spillway gates, but below the crest of the dam).
