U (formerly known as UKTV Play) is a video on demand service owned by UKTV, which is operated by the BBC's commercial subsidiary BBC Studios.The service launched on 4 August 2014 and offers catch-up programming and live broadcasts from UKTV's free-to-air channels (U&Dave, U&Drama, U&W, U&Eden, and U&Yesterday).
TVPlayer was launched as an Android and Apple iOS smartphone app on 19 December 2013. Compatible apps for Android tablet computers and the Apple iPad were released on 30 January 2014. [ 5 ] As of January 2017, the applications had been downloaded 2.5 million times and had over one million active viewers.
UKTV started life as a single channel, UK Gold.The original partners behind the channel were the BBC's commercial arm BBC Enterprises and the outgoing ITV contractor Thames Television, although before the launch the American cable operator Cox Enterprises stepped in and took a majority share, 65 percent, in exchange for underwriting the costs of launching the channel.
