A ship of the line was a type of naval warship constructed during the Age of Sail from the 17th century to the mid-19th century. The ship of the line was designed for the naval tactic known as the line of battle, which involved the two columns of opposing warships manoeuvering to volley fire with the cannons along their broadsides.
Franklin was laid up in ordinary until the summer of 1838 when she was ordered to Boston as a receiving ship. She continued in this capacity until 1852 at which time she was taken to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, razed and broken up. Parts from her were used in the construction of her successor, the screw frigate USS Franklin, launched in 1864. [3]

HDMS Fridericus Quartus (also spelled Fredericus Quartus), launched at Royal Danish Naval Dockyards in 1699, was a three-deck, 110-gun ship of the line designed to be the flagship of the Royal Dano-Norwegian Navy. She soon proved difficult to navigate, and unsuited for the shallow Danish waters.
HMS Exmouth was ordered on 12 March 1840 as a 90-gun Albion-class sailing ship from Devonport Dockyard, where her keel was laid on 13 September 1841. [1] After over a decade on the stocks , on 30 October 1852 she was ordered to be completed as a 91-gun two-decker with steam screw propulsion, and conversion began on 20 June 1853.
