The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a 1969 children's picture book designed, illustrated, and written by American children's author and illustrator Eric Carle. The plot follows a very hungry caterpillar that consumes a variety of foods before pupating and becoming a butterfly .
The animated collection also included The Very Hungry Caterpillar (1969), The Very Quiet Cricket (1990), The Mixed-Up Chameleon (1975), and I See a Song (1973). The collection was made by the Illuminated Film Company for Scholastic Productions, directed by Andrew Goff and produced by Ian Harvey.
Together with his wife Barbara, Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of more than 70 books, including the 1969 classic The Very Hungry Caterpillar, founded the museum. It was the first full-scale museum in the United States devoted to national and international picture book art. [2]
The Very Hungry Caterpillar was voted the number two children's picture book behind Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are in a 2012 survey of School Library Journal readers. [ 15 ] [ 16 ] Carle's artwork was created as collage , using hand-painted papers, which he cut and layered to form bright and colourful images.
"The Very Hungry Caterpillars" is the twentieth episode of the thirty-fourth season of the American animated television series The Simpsons, and the 748th episode overall. It aired in the United States on Fox on May 7, 2023. The episode was directed by Gabriel DeFrancesco and written by Brian Kelley.

Kirkus Book Reviews wrote: "Laura Ingalls Wilder Award–recipient and perennial favorite Carle revisits the counting-book format with his unmistakable blocky, painted collages.
However, the plan works too well and everybody leaves the storybook entirely, each of them landing in other books (Pooh into Where the Wild Things Are, Tigger and Piglet into The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Eeyore into Everybody Poops), whose inhabitants graciously share their honey.
