Woodville was settled about 1815 by Henry Derrick [3] and is the oldest town in Jackson County. [3] It was named for early residents Richard and Annie Wood. Woodville became the seat of Decatur County, Alabama in December 1821, but was attached to Jackson County when Decatur County was abolished the following year.
December 8, 1976 (1 mile south of Clayton off State Route 30: Clayton: Built around 1850, this was the home of Confederate General Henry D. Clayton, Sr., former President of the University of Alabama as well as his son Henry D. Clayton, Jr., a legislator, a judge and the author of the Clayton Antitrust Act of 1914.
Woodville was the terminus of one of the earliest plank roads (a road paved with wooden planks) in the state, which was constructed in 1848 and connected Woodville with Demopolis. The Alabama and Mississippi Railroad came through the town in 1857. By 1860, the town had grown enough to support educational facilities for both boys and girls.

The Old Town Historic District is a 323-acre (131 ha) historic district in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama, United States. It is bounded by U.S. Route 80, Broad and Franklin streets, and Dallas and Selma avenues. The boundaries were increased on December 15, 2003.
