Pictorial Quilt 1898. Harriet Powers (October 29, 1837 – January 1, 1910) [1] was an American folk artist and quilter born into slavery in rural northeast Georgia. Powers used traditional appliqué techniques to make quilts that expressed local legends, Bible stories, and astronomical events. Powers married young and had a large family.
The exhibition features pictorial quilts depicting the history of African Americans from 1619 to the present. [9] It was then toured to the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas from July 8, 2017 to September 17, 2017. [10] From October 6 to December 30, 2017 the exhibition toured to The Columbus Museum In Columbus, Georgia. [11]
