The 2023 United Kingdom local elections were held on Thursday, 4 May 2023 in England and on Thursday 18 May 2023 in Northern Ireland. [4] These included district councils , unitary authorities , and directly elected mayors in England, and included all local councils in Northern Ireland.
The Labour Party have controlled the council since 1973. In May 2021, Labour retained control but the council was criticised for not counting over 1,000 postal votes. [3] In May 2022, Labour retained overall control of the council, but lost three seats. [4]

The 2025 United Kingdom local elections will be held on 1 May 2025. [2] All seats on all 21 county councils in England and ten unitary authorities in England will be up for election. They are expected to be the first local elections following the 2024 general election .

The 2023 election to Belfast City Council was held on 18 May 2023, alongside other local elections in Northern Ireland, two weeks after local elections in England. [1] The Northern Ireland elections were delayed by 2 weeks to avoid overlapping with the coronation of King Charles III .
