One of few muscle cars made in Argentina, the hardtop performance coupé was based on the 1960/66 platform A (Early A-Body). The GTX was first presented in October 1970 as a replacement for the Dodge GT sedan model. The Dodge Polara and its evolved R/T version were later evolutions of this package.
For the Canadian market, the mid-priced big Dodge was marketed as the Polara 440 for 1965 and 1966. This inaccuracy is without question the "440" in Dart 440 is not the engine size, as the 440 cubic inch motor didn't arrive in cars until 1967. 440 however was a trim level. A total of 1,907 A12 M-code 440 Six Pack 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees were produced. This option fell half-way between the standard engine and the Hemi as a US$463 option. The 1969 model year included the base 383 Magnum, 440 Six Pack, and the 426 Hemi. The 440 Magnum (4bbl) was reserved for the Coronet R/T.

Beginning in 1967, Chrysler decided that the Hemi should be available only in their badged muscle cars: the Dodge Charger, Coronet R/T, and the Plymouth Belvedere GTX. The top engine option for the rest of the Coronet line was supposed to be the 383-ci, 4-barrel V8. Despite this, some Hemi-powered 1967 Coronet Deluxe two-door sedans were produced.
