The Scotsman Hotel Edinburgh opened in 2001 in the Edwardian (1905) building which had housed The Scotsman newspaper for nearly a century. The hotel is located on North Bridge between the Royal Mile and Princes Street , thereby straddling Edinburgh’s Medieval Old Town and Georgian New Town .
In 1988, the hotel closed for a major refurbishment with a final cost of £23,000,000, and the building was purchased in 1990 by Balmoral International Hotels. The term was first used descriptively in W. M. Gilbert's Edinburgh in the Nineteenth Century (1901), describing the city "with its Castle and Palace and the royal mile between", and was further popularised as the title of a guidebook by R. T. Skinner published in 1920, "The Royal Mile (Edinburgh) Castle to Holyrood(house)". [2]
