[2] [3] It still stands today as the home of the East India Company restaurant and conference centre. In November 2014 it was designated a heritage building by Ottawa City Council. [4] [5] Constructed circa 1870 by David Hartin, the building replaced Malcolmson’s Tavern which was destroyed by the Carleton County Fire of 1870.
After the Hartwig family sold the building in the early 1990s, several restaurants operated in the building. The first was a Mexican restaurant called "Redondos" in 1995. Others included a roadside diner, "The Round Stone Restaurant", and "The New Gobbler". The last tenant went out of business in mid-2002. [citation needed]
