Denver Health (hospital), formerly named Denver General Hospital, is a hospital in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Denver, founded in 1860. It is one of seven Level I Trauma Centers in Colorado. [1] Denver Health (hospital) is one of the primary teaching hospitals in Denver and is affiliated with the University of Colorado School of Medicine. [2]
Many of the older buildings were subsequently demolished and the site was redeveloped as a geriatric hospital with the new facilities being officially opened by the Princess Royal in 1961. [1] Additional wards were added in 1974. [1] After services had transferred to Barnsley Hospital, Mount Vernon hospital closed in December 2017. [2]
It was originally two separate hospitals: St. Luke's Hospital, which admitted its first patient on June 27, 1881, and Denver Presbyterian Hospital, which opened in 1926. Both operated separately until Columbia Health/HealthONE acquired both in 1992 and the old St. Luke's facility was closed.
The hospital was based on a 324-acre (131 ha) site purchased by the County Council in 1899. It was designed by George Thomas Hine and opened in 1907, to relieve pressure on the county's only existing asylum, Powick Hospital near Malvern and to serve the northern part of the county. It was used as a military hospital during the First World War.
