The park is west of St. Louis County District Courthouse and adjacent to Clayton High School. [1] Shaw Park was founded in 1935 under Mayor Charles A. Shaw. [2] The park was dedicated in 1937 and cost $280,000, with $30,000 coming from the city of Clayton and the rest coming from the federal government.
At 30-acres, Shaw Park is the largest park in Clayton. The park hosts an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a kiddie pool, a diving pool with three platforms, 11 tennis courts, an ice rink, a baseball and soccer field, volleyball courts, handball courts, a sensory garden, a trail, a playground, and multiple pavilions.
The center features four rinks: a "feature" rink with 2,500 tip-up seats and a four-sided HD video scoreboard, the St. Louis Blues main practice rink with seating for 750, the Bob Plager Community Rink with bleacher seating for 400 and dedicated access for sled hockey, and "The Barn", a covered outdoor rink with a 4,000 seat grandstand.
The park also includes picnic shelters, public restrooms, a playground, the Tails and Trails Dog Park, and outdoor tennis courts. The Greensfelder Recreation Complex accessible via the Weidman Road entrance houses a seasonal ice rink, indoor roller rink, and event space.
Synthetic ice will allow year-round skating close to Columbia State Historic Park.
Weather permitting the rink is open Monday through Friday and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., with a free skating session taking place from 8 to 10 a.m.
In 1976, St. Louis SC found a new home at the ice rink at Castle Oak Country Club located at I-270 and I-40 – currently the Chesterfield Athletic Club attached to a DoubleTree Hotel. In order to call this rink home, the facility asked that the club change its name to match the club. St. Louis SC was officially changed to the Castle Oak FSC.
The Rink at Campus Martius is set to be open seven days a week, including holidays, until Sunday, March 3, 2024. Hours Operation times vary depending on the date and month.
