National Television) or simply as Rupavahini, is the national television network of Sri Lanka. The term Rupavahini literally means "purveyor of images" in the Sinhala language. [2] Established by Parliament under Act No. 6 of 1982 for the provision of national television service, it produces and broadcasts programmes in three languages.
Until 2008, Tamil programming aired under the Channel Eye brand, which eventually gave way to Nethra TV. The new arrangement started on 5 January 2008, which meant that, outside of certain occasions where live sporting events were to be carried, Channel Eye was now broadcasting from 9pm to the frequency's end of transmission.
Businessmen Anil Wijewardena and Shan Wickremasinghe established the country's first TV station Independent Television Network which started broadcasting on 15 April 1979. [2] The new station remained independent for less than two months as the government took control of it on 5 June 1979 following a dispute with President J. R. Jayewardene . [ 2 ]

Tamil programming was carried on Rupavahini's main channel since the beginning and in the 2000s on Channel Eye.In January 2008, using Channel Eye's frequencies, Nethra TV started operating on a timeshare basis, between 6:30 am and 9 pm. [4] The new channel opened on 5 January 2008 with the first programme being the inter-religious programme Talk For the Day.
