The Gaither Vocal Band is named after gospel leader Bill Gaither. [2] It was the successor-group of the Bill Gaither Trio. Bill Gaither was born in Alexandria, Indiana, in 1936 to George and Lela Gaither.He formed his first group the Bill Gaither Trio (consisting of Bill, his sister Mary Ann (1945–2018), [1] and brother Danny Gaither (1938–2001) in 1956 while a college student at Anderson College, to which he had transferred after one year at Taylor University.

In 2005, after family members passed his demo tape around to friends of Bill Gaither, Hampton auditioned to replace David Phelps as the tenor of the group. After 7 weeks of auditions Hampton joined The Gaither Vocal Band. [5] Wes also appears in the Gaither Homecoming video series.
Mark Alan Lowry (born June 24, 1958) is an American singer, comedian, minister and songwriter. He is best known for co-writing the song "Mary, Did You Know?" and being a member of the Gaither Vocal Band from 1988 to 2001, and 2009 to 2013, [1] along with Michael English, Guy Penrod, David Phelps and Bill Gaither.

[1] At the 38th GMA Dove Awards, both the album Give It Away and its title song won Dove Awards for Southern Gospel Album of the Year and Southern Gospel Recorded Song of the Year.
