The Osage Nation (/ Λ oΚ s eΙͺ dΚ / OH-sayj) (Osage: ππ» ππΌπ°ππΌπ°Ν , romanized: Ni OkaškΔ , lit. 'People of the Middle Waters') is a Midwestern American tribe of the Great Plains.
In 1897, oil was discovered on the Osage Indian Reservation, present-day Osage County, Oklahoma.The US Department of the Interior managed leases for oil exploration and production on land owned by the Osage Nation through the Bureau of Indian Affairs and later managed royalties, paying individual allottees. Created in 1907 when Oklahoma was admitted as a state, the county is named for and is home to the federally recognized Osage Nation. The county is coextensive with the Osage Nation Reservation, established by treaty in the 19th century when the Osage relocated there from Kansas.
The town, originally known as Deep Ford, [6] was established in 1872 with the reservation for the Osage Nation, part of Indian Territory. The Osage Indian Agency was located along Bird Creek. One of the three main bands of the tribe settled here. Traders followed, building stores during 1872 and 1873.
