Hon Maria Murray, who married 1790 Edward Hay, later Hay-Mackenzie, of Newhall, brother of George Hay, 7th Marquis of Tweeddale , originally members of a junior branch of the family descended from the 2nd Marquess of Tweeddale.
His grandfather, Francis Mackenzie, 2nd Earl of Cromartie, was the second son of George Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 3rd Duke of Sutherland and Anne Hay-Mackenzie, 1st Countess of Cromartie (the great-great-granddaughter of George Mackenzie, 3rd Earl of Cromartie who took part in the Jacobite rising of 1745 and was attainted in 1746).

Firmin was the son of Alexis Breaux and Marguerite Barrieu, born at Riviere aux Canards, near present day Port Williams, Nova Scotia, in 1749.In 1755, Firmin's family, along with many other Acadians, were deported from Canada into Boston during the expulsion of the Acadians. [1]
