Centerville is located in south-central Iowa at the junction of Iowa Highway 2 and Iowa Highway 5. According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 4.89 square miles (12.67 km 2 ), of which 4.86 square miles (12.59 km 2 ) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km 2 ) is water.
The state park, located on a peninsula that is along part of Rathbun Lake's shore, has a width of 828 acres. [2] A campground is within the park that has 149 camping spots with some of these spots having electricity. [3] There are other activities which include hiking on a nature trail, snowmobiling, and boating.
In 1858, Isaac Fuller opened a large mine in Mystic, shipping coal for domestic use in nearby Centerville. In 1887, the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway built a line through Mystic, leading to an explosive growth in mining. [6] By 1893, there were 14 mines in Mystic and 2 in Brazil, just to the south. [7]
