The history of anime can be traced back to the start of the 20th century, with the earliest verifiable films dating from 1917. [1] Before the advent of film, Japan already had a rich tradition of entertainment with colourful painted figures moving across the projection screen in utsushi-e (写し絵), a particular Japanese type of magic lantern show popular in the 19th century.
In the early 1980s, CBN aired an English dub of the Christian-themed anime series Superbook and The Flying House, as well as the girls' drama series Honey Honey and an uncut, Hawaiian-dubbed version of Go Nagai's super robot series Mazinger Z (aired as part of a Japan-focused public-affairs show).
A major milestone in the popularity of anime was the creation of Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka, who is often considered the father of anime. [2] Children's anime and manga can be divided into four categories. The first category consists of anime and manga adaptations of Western stories, such as World Masterpiece Theater. Most of them are TV series.
Crunchyroll is an American subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming service owned by Sony Group Corporation. [b] The service primarily distributes films and television series produced by East Asian media, including Japanese anime, and is headquartered in San Francisco, California, with a Japanese branch located in Shibuya, Tokyo.
As a type of animation, anime is an art form that comprises many genres found in other mediums; it is sometimes mistakenly classified as a genre itself. [8] In Japanese, the term anime is used to refer to all animated works, regardless of style or origin. [9]
Note: Early episode guides apparently stated that episode 51 (season 2/episode 25) of the dub series would be "Adventures in Candy Land." This episode was not dubbed or aired in the U.S., possibly due to concerns from Disney–ABC Television Group about it encouraging children to overindulge in sweets.
