Wang was born in Rochester, New York, to a Taiwanese American family. He is the second of three sons of immigrants from Taiwan. His father, Ta-chung, was a pediatrician and elder cousin of Lee Chien-fu, the original singer of Descendants of the Dragon, and his mother, Lee Ming-shu, moved to the United States to further their college studies in the early 1960s.
