Damn has religious connotations. It is wishing eternal suffering on someone (or, I suppose, something). Among people who consider casual blasphemy unacceptable, this is bad. Darn is a method of repairing cloth, especially knitted cloth. As an expletive, it's a nonsense word with no meaning, thus not offensive.
It depends on context: "Damn you!!!!" (in a loud and somewhat aggressive tone) the word damn is basically a replacement for the f-word, although by deliberatly not using the f-word it's not as bad. Where as "Damn, I dropped my pen" (in an exclamatory tone) is not considered swearing, and almost casual. Darn, can sometimes be seen as worse than ...

Sorted by: 9. It means very little. If someone says "I can't find the goddamn remote control", it has the same meaning as "I can't find the remote control". The curse word just indicates the speaker's frustration. It comes from "God damn" - exactly as you say "damned by God", ie judged and doomed to punishment in Hell.
I'm not convinced there is a clear "bright line" between "bad" words and words that are merely "impolite". I wouldn't put damn (mildly impolite) in the same category as the so-called c-word (highly likely to cause offence if used in polite society), and I certainly wouldn't class ass as "bad" - where I come from it's a zoological term.
What you're looking for is a minced oath version of "damn it". You have many options. If you want to stay as close as possible to "damn it", just without the objectionable "damn" in there, you can use almost any single-syllable word that starts with D. The most common are: • dang it • darn it • dern it
The phrase ‘bloody drunk’ was apparently = ‘as drunk as a blood’ (cf. ‘as drunk as a lord’); thence it was extended to kindred expressions, and at length to others; probably, in later times, its associations with bloodshed and murder (cf. a bloody battle, a bloody butcher) have recommended it to the rough classes as a word that ...
Just out of curiosity, is there a specific way to do this. I've noticed sometimes there isn't a specific number of symbols but normally the number of symbols correspond to the number of letters in the cuss word. E.g.: Wow dude, you are such an &#%-hole!
People are no damn good. It got me into thinking that since the word "damn" has been used before "good", a noun, it should be an adjective and the only meaning of damn as an adjective I could find was - "very, extremely" but then does it imply that people are not extremely good although they are but not so much.
7. As regards communities which use the f-word without real constraint, other communities will sometimes see it as a mark of inferiority, violence, or whatever moral deficit. So, just to emphasize JSBangs warning, be VERY, VERY careful using this word, and when in doubt, just don't. – kitukwfyer. Aug 10, 2010 at 17:59.
