Making Luffy’s Straw Hat. After 9 long days, running out of straw and running out of patience, I finally completed the hat. This one looks much better compared to the last hat I made, with a slight yellow tone more accurate to the anime/LA. The stitching is cleaner and more consistent, and the overall work put into the hat was substantially more.
It turned out really great, so I'd recommend a custom hat over the eBay one. I think the ones on ebay look far too costumy to look good. I do, however, like the ones from Bandai fashion, which are, based on google translate, actual handmade strawhats, made to look like Luffy's.

The base vs gear logic does not work when you are trying to incorporate ACoC. The strawhats are way smarter than Luffy and can easily strategize against him. Zoro Sanji and Jinbei have enough attack power to damage Luffy with Zoro potentially requiring only 2 attacks to deal very high amounts of damage.

Specifically, Shanks told Luffy that he can only give the hat back after he becomes a great pirate. I think the general idea is that until Luffy becomes Pirate king and achieves his goal, Shanks probably won't take it back. There is also probably some deeper meaning to the straw hat. We don't even know how or why Shanks ended up with it.
