After the two leagues reunified into the National Rugby League, the 1998 NRL season saw the 20 teams play 24 matches, playing five teams twice whilst coming up against the other 14 sides once. The next season, the competition cut to 17 teams, meaning one team had a bye each week. The teams still played 24 matches though, playing more teams twice.

In August 2023, the National Rugby League (NRL) announced that two games in the opening round of the 2024 NRL season would be held in Las Vegas. The Brisbane Broncos, Manly Warringah Sea Eagles, South Sydney Rabbitohs, and Sydney Roosters were selected to play in the event, [4] [5] with the remainder of round one being confirmed at a later date.
