Physics Graduate Program. The Department of Physics began in 1872, the same year that Virginia Tech first opened its doors. By 1929, a Master's degree program had been established, and in the 1950s, a doctoral program was added to the Physics curriculum.

In 2017, the National Science Foundation approved a proposal to run a Research Experience for Undergradutes (REU) site in the Virginia Tech physics department. The program ran for the first time in Summer 2019, and we are pleased to be running it for a sixth time in Summer 2024.
Topics of particular interest include spin physics in semiconductors, driven systems coupled to a quantum bath, quantum control and quantum logic gate design, spin-mechanics in condensed matter systems and protocols for entangled photonic states from solid-state emitters.
Specific research interests include: structural phase transitions; dynamic critical behavior near equilibrium phase transitions; phase transitions and scaling in systems far from equilibrium; statistical mechanics of flux lines in superconductors; and applications of statistical physics to biological problems.
