Baia Mare (US: / ˌ b ɑː j ə ˈ m ɑːr ə / BAH-yə MAR-ə, [2] [3] Romanian: [ˈbaja ˈmare] ⓘ; Hungarian: Nagybánya; German: Frauenbach or Groß-Neustadt; Latin: Rivulus Dominarum) is a city along the Săsar River, in northwestern Romania; it is the capital of Maramureș County.
The commune belongs to the Baia Mare metropolitan area. It is located in the western part of the Maramureș County, 17 km (11 mi) from the county seat, Baia Mare, on the border with Satu Mare County. Cicârlău lies on the right bank of the Someș River; the Cicârlău, Ilba, and Nistru rivers flow into Someș within the commune.
Baia Mare Metropolitan Area (BMMA) is located in northwestern Romania and consists of Baia Mare City (Maramureș County seat) and localities found within a distance of 35 km (22 mi).
The commune is located in the western part of the county, on the border with Satu Mare County. It lies on the right bank of the river Someș, at a distance of 33 km (21 mi) from the county seat, Baia Mare. At the 2011 census, Gârdani had a population of 1,151; of those, 96% were ethnic Romanians.
