George Washington (February 22, 1732 [a] – December 14, 1799) was a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797.
The figure's head is based on the work of another painter, namely the Athenaeum Portrait of Washington by the American painter Gilbert Stuart (1755–1828). [ 7 ] [ 8 ] The painting is 142.2 centimeters (56.0 in) high and 105.4 centimeters (41.5 in) wide.
The original Washington quarter design struck until 1998 depicted a head of George Washington facing left, with "Liberty" above the head, the date below, and "In God We Trust" in the left field. The reverse depicted an eagle with wings outspread perches on a bundle of arrows framed below by two olive branches. [1]
George Washington, 1825, one of Stuart's many copies of the Athenaeum Portrait, Walters Art Museum. The painting was owned by Stuart until he died in 1828.
