Matthew Stephen Ward (born October 4, 1973), known professionally as M. Ward, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist from Glendale, California. Ward's solo work is a mixture of folk and blues-inspired Americana analog recordings. He has released 10 studio albums since 1999, primarily through the independent label Merge Records.
The two had covered three songs of Brian Wilson in the past, they later appeared as guest artists on Wilson's "On The Island", a song from his 2015 album No Pier Pressure. Deschanel featured on two M. Ward's solo studio albums, Hold Time (2009) and A Wasteland Companion (2012).

According to band member Matthew Ward, all the vocals were cut in a bedroom of the house the trio lived in at the time. They converted their garage into a mixing room, knocked a hole in the bedroom wall and ran a microphone cord into it. The songs have a heavy use of synthesizers. It was reissued on the Live Oak label.
In addition to the ten original songs, the album features two cover songs: "You Really Got a Hold on Me" (composed by Smokey Robinson) and "I Should Have Known Better" (composed by John Lennon and Paul McCartney). They took a break after that, as Ward was on tour and Deschanel was filming a movie. Volume One was released on March 18, 2008.
