The National Ballet of Canada is a Canadian ballet company that was founded in 1951 in Toronto, Ontario, with Celia Franca, the first artistic director. A company of 70 dancers with its own orchestra, the National Ballet has been led since 2022 by artistic director Hope Muir .
The National Ballet of Canada was formed in 1951 by the English ballet dancer Celia Franca, who had previously been a dancer with ballet companies in the United Kingdom. Franca immigrated to Canada in 1951 and founded the National Ballet of Canada that same year, [2] also hiring the English ballet teacher Betty Oliphant to work with the company.

[11] In 1979 Franca joined Merrilee Hodgins and Joyce Shietze as a Co-Artistic Director to The School of Dance in Ottawa, a non-profit organization designed to provide professional training for dance. At sixteen, Greta Hodgkinson joined The National Ballet of Canada’s Corps de Ballet (1990 – 1993). She was promoted to Second Soloist (1993-1995), then First Soloist (1995-1996) and, shortly before her 17th birthday, reached the highest rank of Principal Dancer (1996-2020).
Augustyn joined the National Ballet of Canada in 1970. He was the National Ballet's principal dancer from 1972 to 1989. From 1980 to 1981, he was principal dancer at the Berlin Opera Ballet. From 1985 to 1986, he was the principal guest artist at the Boston Ballet. From 1989 to 1994, he was the artistic director of the Ottawa Ballet.

In addition to teaching and coaching at the National Ballet's school and company, Leigh was an assistant professor of dance at both York University [7] and George Brown College. In the early 1950s Leigh danced during the summer season with the Toronto Theatre Ballet. [8] She appeared in a leading role in the film The Other Man. [9]
