The Midtown Historic District is a historic district in the city of Mobile, Alabama, United States.It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on November 29, 2001, with a small boundary increase on November 18, 2020 [1] It is roughly bounded by Taylor Avenue, Government Street, Houston Street, Kenneth Street, Springhill Avenue, and Florida Street. Additionally, the Creole cottage and Gulf Coast cottage are building types that are indigenous to the area, and are among the earliest surviving house types. Mobile's downtown townhouses, primarily built between the 1840s and 1860s, typically combine Late Federal style architecture with Greek Revival or Italianate elements and cast iron galleries.
The hotel was completely restored and the rooms were enlarged, reducing their number to 170. It reopened in 1985 managed by Radisson Hotels as the Radisson Admiral Semmes Hotel. [4] In 1989, it was one of the 32 founding hotels in the National Trust for Historic Preservation's Historic Hotels of America program. [6]
The 2-year historic restoration was undertaken by Smith Dalia Architects, in collaboration with TVSA for the tower design. The hotel reopened on May 11, 2007 [6] as The Battle House Renaissance Mobile Hotel & Spa. The hotel is a member of Historic Hotels of America, the official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. [7]
