James Alfred Wight OBE FRCVS (3 October 1916 – 23 February 1995), better known by his pen name James Herriot, was a British veterinary surgeon and author.. Born in Sunderland, Wight graduated from Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939, returning to England to become a veterinary surgeon in Yorkshire, where he practised for almost 50 years.
Jim McDonald was the father of author Brian McDonald, who uncovered the histories of the Elephant and Forty Elephants gangs and brought to public attention largely forgotten gangsters such as Billy Kimber, Darby Sabini, Alf Solomon, Alf White, Johnny Phillips, Freddie Gilbert, George (Brummie) Sage, Dodger Mullins and Tommy Benneworth.
White dropped his association with the Sabinis, transferred his operations to greyhound tracks, and became a part-owner of Hackney Wick Stadium. He was married to Caroline Wooder, and their three children, Alf junior, Harry and Billy, took over leadership of the gang until they were crushed by Jack Comer in 1947.
