Laval [a] is a city in Quebec, Canada.It is in the southwest of the province, north of Montreal.It is the largest suburb of Montreal, the third-largest city in the province after Montreal and Quebec City, and the thirteenth largest city in Canada, with a population of 443,192 in 2021.
Quebec has had some level of policing since 1651, but a modern force was not established until 1843 under the leadership of Robert Henry Russell. [ 1 ] The current force was created from the merger of five separate police forces into the existing Quebec City police force in 2002.
On February 1, 1870, the Quebec provincial government created the Police provinciale du Québec [10] under the direction of its first commissioner, Judge Pierre-Antoine Doucet. This new service took over the headquarters of the Quebec City municipal police, which were then disbanded, although the city relaunched a municipal service in 1877.
