In April 1901 4th Green Howards was finally asked to volunteer for active service and did so, but by now the battalion was so depleted by the departure of the reservists and the MI that not enough fit men old enough for overseas service (the age limit was 20) remained to prepare a viable battalion, and the offer was not accepted.
It is located in the old Trinity Church in the centre of the market place of Richmond in North Yorkshire, England. The Green Howards were amalgamated with The Prince of Wales's Own Regiment of Yorkshire and The Duke of Wellington's Regiment, all Yorkshire-based regiments in the King's Division, to form The Yorkshire Regiment on 6 June 2006.

The Green Howards – 19th (1st North Riding of Yorkshire) Regiment of Foot later Green Howards (Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own Yorkshire Regiment) [1] (So named in 1744, to distinguish them from Howard's Buffs by facing colour of uniform; both regiments had colonels named Howard at the time)
