[1] Coppin State's most recent head coach is Larry Stewart. He was hired as the Eagles' head coach in March 2023, [2] replacing Juan Dixon, who was fired after the 2022–23 season. [3]
On October 14, 2016, Dixon was hired as head coach of the women's basketball team at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). [24] After a 3–25 season, he was hired as men's head coach at Coppin State. [25] After 6 seasons earning only 51 wins as a division one head coach, he was fired in March 2023. [26]

The school's team currently competes in the NCAA Division I in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Before joining NCAA Division I, the Eagles were the 1976 NAIA National Champions.
