Howell Township is a civil township of Livingston County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,893 at the 2020 census , [ 3 ] up from 6,702 at the 2010 census . [ 4 ] The township is bordered on the southeast by the city of Howell , but the two are administered autonomously.
Per the 1875 Plat Maps of Livingston County, the community currently known as Cohoctah Center was labeled as Cohoctah and is located in Section 16 of Cohoctah Township. Section 16 was commonly referred to as the school section within the townships due to the practice of placing a rural school near the center of each township in Section 16.
The Howell Downtown Historic District is located in the central business district of the city, and incorporates parts of nine city blocks as well as the courthouse square. The district encompasses about fourteen acres, and includes sixty building, of which forty-six contribute to the historic significance of the district.
