Cotyledon orbiculata is an extremely variable species, one that grows to approximately 1.3 m (4.3 ft) in height. [1] It has gray-green leaves (up to 13 by 7 cm (5.1 by 2.8 in)), which naturally develop a white, powdery substance (known as farina) on their surfaces; this farina helps reflect sunlight and conserve water.
Portulacaria afra (known as elephant bush, porkbush, purslane tree, dwarf jade and spekboom in Afrikaans) is a small-leaved succulent plant found in South Africa. These succulents commonly have a reddish stem and green leaves, but a variegated cultivar is often seen in cultivation. They are simple to care for and make easy houseplants for a ...
It is a tuberous-rooted herbaceous perennial growing to 15 cm (6 in), with large (2–3 cm (1–1 in)), yellow, cup-shaped flowers held above a collar of 3 leaf-like bracts, appearing in late winter and early spring. The six sepals are bright yellow and petaloid, and the petals are of tubular nectaries. [2]
The branches are made of a fiber that is soft and penetrable, which allows them to store water. Because of its habitat, the Aloidendron pillansii can shed itself of its branches and leaves if they deem detrimental to its survival. Its round, bright yellow flowers are pendant, and hang down below the rosette (unlike those of the other tree aloes).
The succulent leaves are typically arranged on a basal stem, in a dense, spreading rosette. A feature which distinguishes this genus from many of its relatives is the manner in which the flowers bear free petals, and are divided into 6 or 12 sections.
The center of the flower is filled with numerous pollen bearing filaments that are golden yellow and 6–9 millimeters long. [5] [6] The style and stigma-lobes are yellowish. [5] The stamens are sensitive to touch and will move inward to clasp the style if stroked. [9] Flowering is from spring through early summer, May to June in Colorado. [7] [3]
