A Rallye rim (or Rally wheel) is a term used in automotive design for optional race car inspired wheels. [1] These wheels would have the appearance of the strong and lightweight wheels of a race car. Although less commonly used today the rallye rim was a popular option available in the muscle car era.
Road car design gradually moved away from centerlock hubs towards 4, 5 or 6-lug nut wheel fastening systems. [6] Centerlock wheels and hubs continued to be used for racing cars, although the mechanical details of the design gradually changed from the original Rudge-Whitworth pattern.
Another variation of lug nut is the "locking wheel nut", which is used as a theft prevention method to keep thieves from stealing a vehicle's wheels. When utilizing locking wheel nuts, one standard lug nut on each wheel is replaced with a nut that requires a unique key (typically a computer-designed, rounded star shape) to fit and remove the nut.
The original short-wheelbase 90-inch (2,286 mm) and the new long wheelbase 108-inch (2,743 mm) vans came with a 5 × 4-3/4" lug bolt pattern. An addition for 1967 was the G20 heavy-duty 3/4-ton version. The G-20 featured heavier suspension, a 12-bolt rear axle, and increased hauling capability with wheels having a 6-lug bolt pattern.
New was a single backup light, mounted above the license plate. The previous models' wheel covers gave way to slotted six-inch Rally wheels with chrome beauty rings and lug nuts concealed behind chrome caps. Interior alterations were modest and included revised upholstery, and the handbrake moved from beneath the dash to between the seats.
The $187 Nova SS option group included a black grille with unique diamond-mesh pattern, Rally wheels, four-spoke steering wheel, and heavy-duty suspension. Minor changes for the 1977 model year included a more modern round gauge cluster to replace the long sweeping speedometer, and a revised dash panel which changed to a flatter design.
